George School Costa Rica 2023

Esta mañana, nos despertamos muy temprano para nuestro vuelo. Todos estábamos cansados, pero cuando llegamos a nuestra puerta, nos relajamos y fuimos a comprar algo a comer para nuestro desayuno. El vuelo duró más o menos cinco horas. La primera cosa que hicimos después de salir del aeropuerto fue conocer a Fabricio de Global Works. Él es una persona muy amable. Nos presentamos y después, fuimos a comer el almuerzo en un restaurante típico de Costa Rica. La comida estuvo deliciosa. Tengo ganas de probar más platos. Después de un almuerzo buenísimo, fuimos al Museo Nacional donde descubrimos un poco más sobre la historia de Costa Rica y el museo. Por ejemplo, antes del 1948 el museo fue usado como una cárcel. Antes de ir al hotel caminamos un poco en el “Times Square” de Costa Rica donde Fabricio compró helado. Cuando llegamos al hotel la mayoría fue a la piscina pero no he querido cambiar entonces jugué fútbol sola. Luego comimos una cena muy buena con postre de tres leches. En total fue un día de buena compañía y buena comida. Gracias por escuchar.

This morning, we woke up very early for our flight. We were all tired, but when we got to our gate, we relaxed and went to buy something to eat for our breakfast. The flight was about five hours. The first thing we did after leaving the airport was to meet Fabricio from Global Works. He is a really nice guy. We got to know one another, and afterwards, we went to eat lunch in an authentic Costa Rican restaurant. The food was delicious. I look forward to trying more dishes. After a great lunch, we went to the National Museum where we found out a little more about the history of Costa Rica and the museum. For example, before 1948 the museum was used as a jail. Before going to the hotel we walked a bit in the “Times Square” of Costa Rica where Fabricio bought us ice cream. When we got to the hotel most of the group went to the pool but I didn’t want to change so I just played soccer. We had a very good dinner with tres leches dessert. Overall it was a day of good company and good food. Thanks for listening.

¡Hola, Basha está aquí! Estoy escribiendo sobre los eventos de hoy! Hicimos un tur en una granja de cacao. Hicimos chocolate con muchas máginas y estuvo muy delicioso. La noche anterior nos quedamos en un hotel que se llama Casa Cielo Grande. El día estuvo muy ocupado y divertido. Comimos gallo pinto en el desayuno. Comí pescado con papas fritas para el almuerzo. Para la cena había una variedad de opciones. Comí una hamburguesa. ¡Qué rica! Alice, Jasmine, Ariadne, Fabricio y yo jugsmos spikeball antes de la cena también. Me divertí mucho. Soy Katharine y fui a nadar en la piscina con Cecilia y otras. Fue muy divertido y relajante. Después, fui a mi cuarto y me cambié de ropa. Durante el día aprendí mucho sobre el cacao y el chocolate. Fue muy interesante y delicioso. Decoramos nuestro chocolate y lo personalizamos. La temperatura fue muy muy alta, pero el agua ayudó. Estoy emocionada de conocer a las familias y practicar mi español más en el futuro.

Hello, Basha is here! I am writing about today’s events! We toured a cocoa farm. We made chocolate using lots of magic and it was very delicious. The night before, we stayed at a hotel called Casa Cielo Grande. The day was very busy and fun. We ate gallo pinto for breakfast. I had fish and chips for lunch. For dinner there were a variety of options. I ate a hamburger, delicious! Alice, Jasmine, Ariadne, Fabrizio and I played spikeball before dinner too. I had a lot of Fun.

This is Katharine, and I went swimming in the pool with Cecilia and others. It was very fun and relaxing. Afterwards, I went to my room and changed my clothes. During the day I learned a lot about cocoa and chocolate. It was very interesting and delicious. We decorate our chocolate and personalize it. The temperature was very very high, but the water helped. I am excited to meet the families and practice my Spanish more in the future.

¡Hola! ¡Paula está aquí! Estoy escribiendo un diario para contar el tercer día en Costa Rica. Llegamos a la familia y fue muy lindo conocerlos, con todo un amor. La mamá Mary es muy muy dulce, siempre atenta, muy cariñosa y me recuerda a mi mamá. Cristián, por otro lado, es muy chistoso, y también es muy fácil hablar con él, no hacen que nuestra estadía sea incómoda. Toti y Yipi son mis hermanitos y personas favoritas, las niñas que más quiero. Jimenita y Josué son muy lindos y dulces, son como mi familia, los quiero mucho. Aún no conozco a Paula, pero imagino que es igual de dulce y grandioso como todos aquí.

Hola, ¡Cecilia está aquí! Hoy es un buen día. Yo lo disfruté mucho. Estoy muy feliz de conocer a la familia. Son muy simpáticos. Mi español no es bueno, entonces, estoy muy agradecida de que Paula está aquí porque ella me ayuda mucho. Me encantan las comidas de la familia mucho, me siento como en casa. La vida aquí es muy divertido, pero hace mucho calor. Ojalá que mañana llueva para que no haga tanto calor.

Hi! Paula is here! I am writing a diary entry for the third day in Costa Rica. We arrived at the family and it was very nice to meet them, with all their love. Mom, Mary is very very sweet, always attentive, very affectionate and reminds me of my mom. Cristián, on the other hand, is very funny, and he is also very easy to talk to, they make our stay comfortable. Toti and Yipi are my favorite little brothers and people, the girls I love the most. Jimenita and Josué are very cute and sweet, they are like my family, I love them very much. I haven’t met Paula yet, but I imagine she’s just as sweet and awesome as everyone here.

Hello, Cecilia is here! Today is a good day. I enjoyed it a lot. I am very happy to meet the family. They are very nice. My Spanish is not good, so I am very grateful that Paula is here because she helps me a lot. I love family meals very much, I feel at home. Life here is a lot of fun, but it’s very hot. I hope it rains tomorrow so it won’t be so hot.

Hola!

Halayla està aquì! Estoy escribiendo este diario sobre los eventos de el dìa 4 de nuestro viaje en Costa Rica.

Despuès de desayunar con nuestras familias nuevas, caminamos hacia la cocina vieja en el pueblo para empezar nuestro trabajo de servicio. Primero lavanos el piso y la pared con cepillos y jabòn. Escuchamos mùsica de Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny y demasiado Taylor Swift. Fuè muy divertido pasar tiempo juntos y tambièn hacer servicio. Hicimos muy buen trabajo y luego regresamos a nuestras casas a almorzar. Mi mamà es muy linda, con mi mamà Yaudy, mi papà Adriàn, mi hermanito Andy, y mi hermano de la misma edad, Steven. Mi mamà es muy dulce y su comida es el màs rico del mundo. Voy a pasar el batàn a mi compañera para hablar sobre el dìa. Hola! Alice està aquì. Despuès de almorzar en las casas de nuestras familias, regresamos a la cocina de la comunidad para servicio. Nosotros sacamos las hierbas en el jardìn. La trabaja fuè muy dificil pero divertido con amigos y mùsica! Despuès del servicio nosotros fuimos al rìo por nadar, fuè muy divertido! Para la cena fuimos a la cocina por clase de tortillas con las familias! Las tortillas fueron muy rico. Despuès nosotros jugamos spikeball y pasamos tiempo con los niños y las niñas. Pura vida!

Hello!

Halayla is here! I am writing this diary about the events of day 4 of our trip in Costa Rica.

After having breakfast with our new families, we walked to the old kitchen in town to start our service work. First wash the floor and the wall with brushes and soap. We listen to music by Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny and too much Taylor Swift. It was a lot of fun spending time together and also doing service. We did a very good job and then we went back to our houses for lunch. My mom is very cute, with my mom Yaudy, my dad Adriàn, my little brother Andy, and my brother the same age, Steven. My mom is very sweet and her food is the richest in the world. I’m going to pass the fulling to my partner to talk about the day. Hello! Alice is here. After having lunch in the houses of our families, we return to the kitchen of the community for service. We take out the herbs in the garden. The work was very difficult but fun with friends and music! After the service we went to the river for a swim, it was a lot of fun! For dinner we went to the kitchen for omelette class with the families! The tortillas were very rich. Afterwards we played spikeball and spent time with the boys and girls. Pure Life!

Santi escribiendo. Hoy fue el quinto día del viaje a Costa Rica y fue un día muy diferente. Hicimos hoy las tirolesas, lo cual fue muy divertido. Aunque había mucha espera en las plataformas, yo vi a todos con una sonrisa al final. Después, comimos en el restaurante favorito de Fabricio y la comida estuvo muy buena. De ahí visitamos un pueblo para hacer compras y explorar, pero yo decidí quedarme en el bus para descansar mejor. Una vez que llegamos a las casas estaba lloviendo muy fuerte y todas las familias estaban ocupadas por la noche, así que visitaron algunas amigas nuestra casa donde jugamos unos juegos de cartas antes de despedirnos e irnos a dormir.

¡Ay! Yari escribiendo ahora, ¡y me gusta Costa Rica! Los hermanos de la familia tenían Mortal Kombat en la televisión. Fui el mejor pero los hermanos jugaron bien también. Después de los videojuegos, fuimos a la ciudad. Vi muchas tiendas para helado y gelato. Espero que nos divirtamos más en Costa Rica. Aprendí más palabras palabras con “-ito” al final. Les enseñé algunas palabras en inglés a mis hermanos. ¡Qué chévere!

Santi writing. Today was the fifth day of the trip to Costa Rica and it was a very different day. We did the zip lines today which was a lot of fun. Although there was a lot of waiting on the platforms, I saw everyone with a smile at the end. Later, we ate at Fabricio’s favorite restaurant and the food was very good. From there, we visited a town to shop and explore, but I decided to stay on the bus to get some good rest. Once we got back to our homes it was raining very hard and all the families were busy for the night, so some friends visited our house where we played some card games before saying goodbye and going to sleep.

Hey! Yari writing now, and I like Costa Rica! The brothers in my host family had the Mortal Kombat TV game. I was the best but the brothers played well too. After the video games, we went to the city. I visited many ice cream and gelato shops. I look forward to having more fun in Costa Rica. I learned more words words with “-ito” at the end. I taught some English words to my brothers. Cool!

¡Hola! Soy Maya, y seré su guía el 8 de junio. Hoy fue nuestro segundo día de servicio y empezamos con sacar las malas hierbas de la tierra detrás de la cocina. Después, sembramos césped allí, pero no terminamos antes del almuerzo. Al mismo tiempo, algunos empezaron a pintar las paredes. Ohh, casi olvidé – el desayuno con nuestra familia estuvo increíble – gallo pinto, huevos, plátanos, queso, ¡y más! Después, teníamos un poquito de tiempo en las casas para almorzar – la comida otra vez estuvo muy rica – y yo, además de almorzar, también escribí en mi propio diario y dormí un poquito. Yesenia, la madre en mi familia- la que cocinaba la comida tan deliciosa- nos dio helado de chocolate y coco, hecho por una familia cerca de nosotros. Después de almorzar, regresamos a la cocina y terminamos de sembrar el césped y pintar. Después de un rato con nuestras familias para cenar, regresamos al salón en el centro del pueblo para jugar Spikeball y fútbol y ver una película. La mayor parte del tiempo, ayudaba con las palomitas – incluyendo probarlas, en el caso de que fueran tóxicas. Aparte de cuando una pelota me pegó en la cabeza, fue un día muy divertido y productivo.

Ya es Emery otra vez. Pienso que mi compañera, Maya, ha escrito muchísimo, entonces estos van a ser mis momentos favoritos del día. Primero son todas mis conversaciones con mi mamá que se llama Yesenia. Hablamos sobre muchísimo. También, hablé con mi primo o sobrino, no sé cuál es. Se llama Cristofer y a él le encanta hablar y estar con los chicos de nuestro grupo, pero funciona porque me encanta escucharlo. La mejor parte del día fue cuando conocí a muchos más personas como una niña en la familia de Raquel y otros, y lo más importante fue cuando pude jugar fútbol por la noche, pero eso solo fue una práctica para el partido de mañana a las 4. Estoy súper súper emocionada por el partido en el salón comunal. Gracias, ya sé que he dicho que esto iba a ser corto. Entonces, perdónenme, pero estoy muy muy feliz y tengo mucha emoción ahorita.

Hello! I am Maya, and I will be your guide on June 8. Today was our second day on duty and we started by weeding the dirt behind the kitchen. Afterwards, we sow grass there, but we didn’t finish before lunch. At the same time, some began to paint the walls. Ohh, I almost forgot – breakfast with our family was amazing – gallo pinto, eggs, plantains, cheese, and more! Afterwards, we had a little time at home for lunch – the food was again very tasty – and I, in addition to having lunch, also wrote in my own diary and slept a little. Yesenia, the mother in my family – the one who cooked such delicious food – gave us chocolate and coconut ice cream, made by a family near us. After lunch, we returned to the kitchen and finish sowing the lawn and painting. After spending time with our families for dinner, we headed back to the saloon in the center of town to play spike-ball and soccer and watch a movie. Most of the time, we helped with the popcorn – including testing it! Aside from getting hit on the head by a ball, it was a very fun and productive day.

It’s Emery again. I think my partner, Maya, has written a lot, so these are going to be my favorite parts of the day. First are all my conversations with my mom whose name is Yesenia. We talked about a lot. Also, I spoke to my cousin or nephew, I don’t know which one it is. His name is Cristofer and he loves to talk and be with the guys in our group, but it works because I love to listen to him. The best part of the day was when I met many more people like a girl in Raquel’s family and others, and the most important thing was when I got to play soccer at night, but that was just a practice for tomorrow’s game at 4. I am super super excited for the game in the community room. Thank you, I know I said that this was going to be short. So, forgive me, but I’m very, very happy and I’m very excited right now.

¡Hola! Jasmine escribiendo. Hoy fue el día final en la comunidad. En la mañana, nosotros miramos el “FEA”, Festival Estudiantes de Artes. Mucha gente cantó y bailó. El festival fue muy divertido, pero muy triste porque fue el día final. Después, nosotros almorzamos en la escuela. Comimos pollo, vegetales y más. Las familias condujeron a las casas porque estuvo lloviendo. Katharine y yo leímos, descansamos y hablamos con la familia.

¡Hola! Katharine está aquí. Hoy fue muy triste porque fue el día final con las familias. Después del festival y un poco tiempo de descanso, jugamos con los niños y jugué fútbol y spikeball. ¡Fue muy divertido! No soy muy buena jugando fútbol, pero fue divertido. Entonces, Jasmine y yo fuimos a nuestra casa y comimos la cena final antes de salir al salón en el centro. Tuvimos una fiesta de despedida. Comimos helado, jugamos spikeball y cantamos karaoke. ¡Vamos a extrañar a las familias!

Hello! Jasmine writing. Today was the final day in the community. In the morning, we watched the “FEA”, Festival Estudiantes de Artes. Many people sang and danced. The festival was very fun, but very sad because it was the final day. Afterwards, we had lunch at the school. We ate chicken, vegetables and more. The families drove to the houses because it was raining. Katharine and I read, rested, and talked with our family.

Hello! Katharine here. Today was very sad because it was the final day with the families. After the festival and a little rest time, we played with the children and I played soccer and spike ball. It was fun! I’m not very good at soccer, but it was fun. So, Jasmine and I went home and ate our final dinner before heading out to the salon comunal downtown. We had a farewell party. We ate ice cream, played spike ball and sang karaoke. We are going to miss the families!

Esta mañana dijimos adios a nuestras familias. Todo eramos tristes. Keysi y Mery nos dieron a Basha y a mì un pequeño regalo. Nos intercambiamos nuestros contactos para quedar en contacto. Tristes de irnos, le dimos una carta a Mery para agradecer por su hospitalidad. De Pueblo Nuevo fuimos a una fàbrica de queso, aprendimos sobre como hacer el queso y despuès comimos nuestro almuerzo que fuè muy rico. El jefe de la fàbrica nos diò un tour y probamos muchos frutos tradicionales de Costa Rica. Vimos animales que eran muy lindos. Sacamos muchas fotos y descubrimos ranas venosas. El viaje hasta el nuevo hotel fuè muy interesante. La naturaleza es muy bonit. Tengo ganas de ir a una caminata.

This morning we said goodbye to our families. We were all sad. Keysi and Mery gave Basha and me a small gift. We exchanged our contact information to stay in touch. Sad to leave, we gave Mery a letter to thank her for her hospitality. From Pueblo Nuevo we went to a cheese factory, we learned about how to make cheese and then we ate our lunch which was very tasty. The head of the factory, Crisley, gave us a tour and we tried many traditional Costa Rican fruits. We saw animals that were very cute. We took lots of photos and discovered cool frogs. The trip to the new hotel was very interesting. Nature is very beautiful. I feel like going for a walk!

¡Hoy fue un buen día! El desayuno fue waffles, sandia y papaya. Después, nosotros trabajamos por tres horas antes de almorzar. El servicio fue duro pero valió la pena. Almorzamos a las doce y comimos ensalada de pasta, arroz y frijoles con chips. Después, continuamos con el servicio entre 1 a 3. ¡Luego nadamos en la laguna y fue muy muy bonito! Algunas personas fueron al hotel para ducharse y otro grupo hizo una caminata a las fumarolas y exploramos el bosque. Regresamos a las seis y comimos tostones, arroz con frijoles y pollo frito. Después, tuvimos un tiempo para conocer a las personas que trabajan en B.E.N. ¡El día fue increíble!

Today was a good day! Breakfast was waffles, watermelon and papaya. Afterwards, we worked for three hours before having lunch. The service was rough but it was worth it. We had lunch at twelve and had pasta salad, rice, and beans with chips. Afterwards, we continued with the service between 1 to 3. Then we swam in the lagoon and it was very very beautiful! Some people went to the hotel to shower and another group hiked to the fumaroles and explored the forest. We came back at six and ate tostones, rice and beans, and fried chicken. Afterwards, we had some time to meet the people who work at B.E.N. The day was amazing!

En la mañana Basha, Paula y yo hicimos ejercicio con Raquel y Fabrizzio. Después, nosotros comimos desayuno con todos. El desayuno fue empanadas, la piña y café. Después de desayunar nosotros fuimos al hotel por nuestro autobús. En el autobús dibujamos , dormimos y jugamos a las cartas. El viaje en el bus fue muy rápido. Nosotros paramos para almorzar y comprar en el supermercado. En el hotel de la playa llovió mucho pero la cena estuvo muy rica. ¡Después de la reunión, nosotros pasamos tiempo en el cuarto y nos preparamos para surfear.

In the morning Basha, Paula and I exercised with Raquel and Fabricio. Afterwards, we ate breakfast with everyone. Breakfast was empanadas, pineapple and coffee. After breakfast we went to the hotel by our bus. On the bus we draw, sleep and play cards. The bus ride was very fast. We stopped for lunch and shopping at the supermarket. At the hotel on the beach it rained a lot but dinner was very tasty. After the meeting, we spent time in the room and got ready to surf!

¡Hola, Paula escribiendo! Hoy fue un día muy chévere. Aunque en la mañana yo me levanté muy tarde así que no fui a la sesión de ejercicio con Fabricio, Basha, Alice y Katharine, pero desayuné con todos un desayuno muy rico. Después, nos arreglamos para ir a la playa a nuestras lecciones de surf, pero cuando los instructores vieren un cocodrilo entonces las lecciones se cancelaron. Eso no hizo nuestro día menos divertido, porque el tiempo en la playa con mis amigos fue muy gratificante y divertido. Jugamos voleibal y también me bronceé con Katharine y Jasmine. Los demás estaban jugando fútbol y Spikeball. Después, volvimos al almuerzo, el cual estuvo muy rico y después fuimos a la piscina para relajarnos un poco. A las 2 fuimos con mis amigas Basha, Halaylah, Lakmé, Alice y Maya a la playa Bahìa Ballena. Con Basha y Alice nos tocamos fotos y disfrutamos la hermosa vista de la playa. Cantamos y nadamos, y fue simplemente un día muy lindo. En la noche fuimos a comer a un restaurante muy lindo por la vista increíble que tenía. Fue un día muy bueno y todos la pasamos muy bien. ¡Voy a extrañar Costa Rica!

Hi Paula writing! Today was a very cool day. Although in the morning I got up very late so I didn’t go to the exercise session with Fabricio, Basha, Alice and Katharine, but I had breakfast with everyone, a very rich breakfast. Afterwards, we manage to go to the beach for our surf lessons, but when the instructors saw a crocodile, the lessons were cancelled. That didn’t make our day any less fun, because the time at the beach with my friends was very rewarding and fun. We played volleyball and I also got a tan with Katharine and Jasmine. The others were playing soccer and spikeball. Afterwards, we went back for lunch, which was very tasty, and then we went to the pool to relax a bit. At 2 we went with my friends Basha, Halaylah, Lakmé, Alice and Maya to Bahìa Ballena beach. With Basha and Alice we took photos and enjoyed the beautiful view of the beach. We sang and swam, and it was just a very nice day. At night we went to eat at a very nice restaurant because of the incredible view it had. It was a very good day and we all had a great time. I am going to miss Costa Rica!

Hello! Halaylah typing. Today was a very fun day with many activities. First, we get up at six in the morning to get ready to go to the beach. Then we take the bus to the beach and start our surfing lesson. This lesson was very very fun and everyone really enjoyed it. For me, it was very difficult at first, but I rode a lot of waves! After the class we had time to relax, eat watermelon, drink water (of course) and swim in the sea. Me, Lakmé and Santi swam together for a long time and we also surfed some waves with our bodies! On the way to the hotel we listened to a lot of music and relaxed. At the hotel, we had lunch and it was delicious! Then we had time to rest and I swam in the pool with many of my friends. We did a lot of tricks and played “pura vida”, our version of Marco Polo. Afterwards, we traveled again to a waterfall where we did a lot of swimming and exploring. It was seriously amazing and a once in a lifetime experience. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel again and had a “taco bar”. It was delicious! Then, finally, we had time to rest and I went to the supermarket with my friends. When I got back to my room, I started to pack my suitcase for tomorrow. It was a very fun day for our final day of activities together. I am going to miss Costa Rica and my colleagues – no, my friends – SO MUCH. I’m very sleepy, so I’m saying my goodbyes. Pure Life!
