Kaya and Vicky: we made a cool tent on the plane ride.
Bee: It was nice sitting with my buddy on the plane.
Maeve: We got a lot of bonding time in the airport.
Camille: It was a lot of fun, it was really worth the long flights. It was a long and a tiring day, but it was a new experience so that was cool.
Alyson: It was fun to walk around the airport!
Barrett: It was fun traveling together. We didn’t have our cellphones, so we spent our time playing cards, coloring, making bracelets, and that made us bond even more.

Kaya y Vicky: Hicimos una tienda genial en el vuelo en avión.
Bee: Fue agradable sentarme con mi amigo en el avión.
Maeve: Pasamos mucho tiempo juntos en el aeropuerto.
Camille: Fue muy divertido, realmente valió la pena los vuelos largos. Fue un día largo y agotador, pero fue una nueva experiencia, así que estuvo genial.
Alyson: ¡Fue divertido caminar por el aeropuerto!
Barrett: Fue divertido viajar juntos. No teníamos nuestros teléfonos celulares, así que pasamos nuestro tiempo jugando a las cartas, coloreando, haciendo pulseras, y eso nos hizo unirnos aún más.

We went on a tour of Old San Juan today and we learned about its history. It was awesome to see all of the pastel colored houses. For lunch, we went to an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant and indulged in delicious cultural food. After, we saw a fort and archeological museum that are now a National Park. Walking through the tunnels was really cool! We also went to see street murals that involved the politics and rights of people in Puerto Rico. We ended the day with some relaxation on the beach. The water was very warm so it was a nice rest!

Fuimos de excursión por el Viejo San Juan hoy y aprendimos sobre su historia. Fue increíble ver todas las casas de colores pastel. Para el almuerzo, fuimos a un auténtico restaurante puertorriqueño y nos deleitamos con deliciosa comida cultural. Después, visitamos un fuerte y un museo arqueológico que ahora son un Parque Nacional. ¡Caminar por los túneles fue realmente genial! También fuimos a ver murales callejeros que trataban sobre la política y los derechos de la gente en Puerto Rico. Terminamos el día con un poco de relajación en la playa. ¡El agua estaba muy cálida, así que fue un agradable descanso!

Group B
Today we got up at 7:30 for the first work day. We had breakfast at 8 and left soon afterwards. For breakfast we had French toast, sausage, and fruit. We learned new words like cubo for bucket and casco for the hard hats we wore. At the work site we made a line to pass buckets of concrete up to the people pouring it and then bringing the buckets back to where a few of us scooped concrete into the buckets. We also learned the “formula” for the concrete. It was all new information and we learned a lot. Everyone was so nice and friendly. A few of the fluent speakers also got to practice their Spanish translation skills by helping the rest of the group understand the instructions that were given in Spanish at the beginning. Willie and Angel showed us how the cement mixer worked and were working with us the entire time.
For lunch we went to Maria’s house. It was a delicious meal consisting of chicken, beans, rice and a salad with tomatoes. We ate on the top floor of her house, a patio with 3 long tables. Afterwards, we rode the bus to the Big Yellow House, honking on the steep turns as we couldn’t see anyone else in front of us. We were so lucky that we had an amazing bus driver that went out of his way to make life just a little easier for us as many of us were very tired. Once we arrived, we quickly changed into our bathing suits before spending a delightful few hours swimming and lounging at the beach. The waves were nice and it was a cool temperature. The color of the water was amazing, a blue that seemed to glow in the sunlight.
We ate dinner at the big yellow house. We had a mix of salad, potatoes, chicken, bread, and pastries for dessert. We are excited for the adventures that tomorrow will bring!

Hoy nos levantamos a las 7:30 para el primer día de trabajo. Desayunamos a las 8 y salimos poco después. Para el desayuno comimos torrijas, salchichas y fruta. Aprendimos nuevas palabras como “cubo” para referirnos al balde y “casco” para los cascos duros que llevábamos puestos. En el sitio de trabajo formamos una línea para pasar los cubos de concreto a las personas que lo vertían y luego llevar los cubos de regreso donde algunos de nosotros llenamos los cubos con concreto. También aprendimos la “fórmula” para el concreto. Fue toda información nueva y aprendimos mucho. Todos fueron muy amables y simpáticos. Algunos de los hablantes fluidos también pudieron practicar sus habilidades de traducción al ayudar al resto del grupo a entender las instrucciones que se dieron en español al principio. Willie y Ángel nos mostraron cómo funcionaba la mezcladora y estuvieron trabajando con nosotros todo el tiempo.
Para el almuerzo fuimos a casa de María. Fue una comida deliciosa que consistía en pollo, frijoles, arroz y una ensalada con tomates. Comimos en el piso de arriba de su casa, un patio con 3 mesas largas. Después, tomamos el autobús hacia la Gran Casa Amarilla, tocando el claxon en las curvas empinadas ya que no podíamos ver a nadie más delante de nosotros. Tuvimos mucha suerte de tener un conductor de autobús increíble que se esforzó por hacer la vida un poco más fácil para nosotros, ya que muchos estábamos muy cansados. Una vez que llegamos, nos cambiamos rápidamente a nuestros trajes de baño antes de pasar unas horas deliciosas nadando y descansando en la playa. Las olas eran agradables y la temperatura era fresca. El color del agua era increíble, un azul que parecía brillar bajo el sol.
Cenamos en la gran casa amarilla. Tuvimos una mezcla de ensalada, papas, pollo, pan y pasteles de postre. ¡Estamos emocionados por las aventuras que nos traerá mañana!

L: today i talked to so many people i haven’t talked to in so long. tbh i was expecting my group to be really bad but it wasn’t and it was actually really normal and fun just like how i talk to my friends.
Ari: the beach today was very fun and calm, it wasn’t too hot and the clouds were blanketing the heat away from all of us. i loved taking photos of the water and the palm trees it was really nice.
Sula: Today we went to two very beautiful churches they were called catedral de puerto rico la iglesia de san jose which is the church of the family of ponce de leon. The churches were very beautiful and Esther took many amazing photos.
Chloe: There were many different views at all the stops on the tour today. From the fort we got to see the ocean and the green parts of the city along with some huge cruise ships. Everything we saw from the ocean and the greenery to the many murals our tour guide showed us. There were two different shopping opportunities where we could buy cool and unique souvenirs or sweaters and shirts that had San Juan on them. The day was fantastic and I am excited to go work in the community again tomorrow.

L: Hoy hablé con tanta gente con la que no había hablado en mucho tiempo. Para ser honesta, esperaba que mi grupo fuera realmente malo, pero no lo fue. De hecho, fue muy normal y divertido, justo como cuando hablo con mis amigos.
Ari: La playa hoy fue muy divertida y tranquila. No hacía demasiado calor y las nubes cubrían el calor de todos nosotros. Me encantó tomar fotos del agua y de las palmeras, fue realmente agradable.
Sula: Hoy fuimos a dos iglesias muy hermosas. Se llamaban la Catedral de Puerto Rico y la Iglesia de San José, que es la iglesia de la familia de Ponce de León. Las iglesias eran muy bonitas y Esther tomó muchas fotos increíbles.
Chloe: Hubo muchas vistas diferentes en todas las paradas del tour hoy. Desde la fortaleza pudimos ver el océano y las partes verdes de la ciudad, junto con algunos enormes cruceros. Todo lo que vimos, desde el océano y la vegetación hasta los muchos murales que nos mostró nuestra guía turística. Hubo dos oportunidades de compras donde pudimos comprar souvenirs geniales y únicos o suéteres y camisetas que tenían San Juan en ellas. El día fue fantástico y estoy emocionada de ir a trabajar en la comunidad nuevamente mañana.

Today we went to help out the people of the community of Villa del Rio by building houses. Often because the population in Puerto Rico is on the smaller side, there aren’t enough people to make bucket brigades, so we helped make concrete and passed the concrete to help people recover from Hurricane Maria. We made cement out of sand, and water to pour it into the pillars to support the houses foundation and tomorrow we will pour the flooring for the bedrooms. Lastly, we ended the work day by going to Maria’s house who prepared us a delicious meal with rice, chicken with tomatoes, beans, and salads. Later, we went to the local beach to play in the waves. Some people saw fish and turtles! We ended the night with a Salsa lesson and a circle reflection. Hasta Mañana!

Hoy fuimos a ayudar a la gente de la comunidad de Villa del Río construyendo casas. A menudo, debido a que la población en Puerto Rico es más pequeña, no hay suficiente gente para hacer cadenas de cubos, así que ayudamos a hacer concreto y pasamos el concreto para ayudar a la gente a recuperarse del huracán María. Hicimos cemento con arena y agua para verterlo en los pilares para apoyar los cimientos de las casas y mañana verteremos el piso para los dormitorios. Por último, terminamos el día de trabajo yendo a la casa de María, quien nos preparó una deliciosa comida con arroz, pollo con tomates, frijoles y ensaladas. Más tarde, fuimos a la playa local a jugar en las olas. ¡Algunas personas vieron peces y tortugas! Terminamos la noche con una lección de salsa y una reflexión en círculo. ¡Hasta mañana!

Today was the highlight of this week in Puerto Rico. We went on the Taino Tour and it was definitely a historical awakening. I learned a lot about the history of Puerto Rico, and I felt like I really connected with my ancestors. Putting the clay on our body was really fun and going down the river was really beautiful. We swam in the river and looked at some of the petroglyph carvings that the ancient Tainos created. We also put river clay all over our body and let it dry and it ended up making our skin very smooth. The lunch was one of the best ones that we’ve had throughout the trip. Interestingly enough, all of the food was made from a farm near where the tour was located. For this delicious lunch, we had garlic and herb spaghetti, salad with carrot top pesto dressing, bean and kale empanadas, and lemongrass lemonade. Overall, the experience of the Taino tour was really exciting and inspiring because it was unique.

Hoy fue el punto culminante de esta semana en Puerto Rico. Fuimos en el Tour Taino y definitivamente fue un despertar histórico. Aprendí mucho sobre la historia de Puerto Rico, y sentí que realmente conecté con mis ancestros. Poner arcilla en nuestro cuerpo fue realmente divertido y bajar por el río fue realmente hermoso. Nadamos en el río y observamos algunas de las talladuras de petroglifos que los antiguos Tainos crearon. También nos pusimos arcilla del río por todo el cuerpo y la dejamos secar, lo que hizo que nuestra piel quedara muy suave. El almuerzo fue uno de los mejores que hemos tenido durante el viaje. Curiosamente, toda la comida fue hecha en una granja cerca de donde estaba ubicado el tour. Para este delicioso almuerzo, tuvimos espaguetis de ajo y hierbas, ensalada con aderezo pesto de hojas de zanahoria, empanadas de frijoles y col rizada, y limonada de hierba de limón. En general, la experiencia del tour Taino fue realmente emocionante e inspiradora porque fue única.

Today was a beautiful day! We visit a family in the forest was a canyon full of water with petroglyphs of different tribes carved on rocks. We saw the petroglyphs that the Taínos made a long time ago. They were really cool, they were faces!
To get there, we could jump with our life jacket to the river, an small canyon- then we floated down and reached a small piece of land. Something really fun today was going down the gorge. The water was really refreshing from the heat. It was really fun spending time with my friends all day. The whole journey was very peaceful and I really enjoyed it. We also used purple volcanic rock to make paste that we put on our skin. It was funny seeing everyone’s faces covered in purple clay and playing in the river together. For lunch we had noodles, empanadas, lemongrass lemonade, and other yummy Sauce. We finished the night off with a karaoke party to celebrate Victoria and Renee’s birthday and our last night in Puerto Rico.

¡Hoy fue un día hermoso! Visitamos una familia en el bosque, era un cañón lleno de agua con petroglifos de diferentes tribus tallados en las rocas. Vimos los petroglifos que los Taínos hicieron hace mucho tiempo. ¡Eran realmente geniales, eran caras! Para llegar allí, pudimos saltar con nuestro chaleco salvavidas al río, un pequeño cañón, luego flotamos y llegamos a un pequeño trozo de tierra. Algo realmente divertido hoy fue bajar por la garganta. El agua estaba realmente refrescante debido al calor. Fue muy divertido pasar tiempo con mis amigos todo el día. Todo el viaje fue muy tranquilo y realmente lo disfruté. También usamos roca volcánica morada para hacer pasta que pusimos en nuestra piel. Fue divertido ver las caras de todos cubiertas de arcilla morada y jugando en el río juntos. Para el almuerzo, tuvimos fideos, empanadas, limonada de hierba de limón y otras salsas deliciosas. Terminamos la noche con una fiesta de karaoke para celebrar el cumpleaños de Victoria y Renee y nuestra última noche en Puerto Rico.
