Prospect Hill Academy Puerto Rico 2023

At first the heat made us feel like we were melting. As we rode in the van to the Big Yellow House we saw all the beautiful houses and beach scenery. When we got to the house we picked out rooms. After having a pizza lunch we played some games and spent time with each other. We then headed off to the beach, where we were surprised by the hot sand and warm water, unlike the rocky sand and cold water we have in New England. When in the water, we played categories, where the punishment was that we would get flipped over. We then came home, got changed and decided on “Team Groups” by random number and named them. We then each put on our own unique presentations mainly singing and dancing. We then ranked the presentations and the group that won was Rohan’s group. They won on a very… questionable performance. Nevertheless they put on a great show. Toward the end of the day we had a nice dinner that consisted of chicken, ribs, salad and potatoes. It was pretty good. After that we had some free time and then we had a large group activity where we ranked how comfortable we felt with different scenarios. After that we drafted our community guidelines and set rules everyone had to follow. In the end we, the leader group presented on what we would do tomorrow and then we had an hour to use our phones. We are looking forward to what tomorrow brings.

Al principio el calor nos hizo sentir como si nos derritiéramos. Mientras viajábamos en la camioneta a la Gran Casa Amarilla, vimos todas las hermosas casas y el paisaje de la playa. Cuando llegamos a la casa elegimos las habitaciones. Después de almorzar pizza, jugamos algunos juegos y pasamos tiempo juntos. Luego nos dirigimos a la playa, donde nos sorprendió la arena caliente y el agua tibia, a diferencia de la arena rocosa y el agua fría que tenemos en Nueva Inglaterra. Cuando estábamos en el agua, jugábamos categorías, donde el castigo era que nos volteábamos. Luego volvimos a casa, nos cambiamos y decidimos los “Grupos de equipo” por número aleatorio y los nombramos. Luego, cada uno de nosotros realizaba sus propias presentaciones únicas, principalmente cantando y bailando. Luego clasificamos las presentaciones y el grupo que ganó fue el grupo de Rohan. Ganaron con una actuación muy… cuestionable. Sin embargo, dieron un gran espectáculo. Hacia el final del día tuvimos una buena cena que consistió en pollo, costillas, ensalada y papas. Era bastante bueno. Después de eso, tuvimos algo de tiempo libre y luego tuvimos una actividad de grupo grande en la que clasificamos qué tan cómodos nos sentíamos con diferentes escenarios. Después de eso, redactamos las pautas de nuestra comunidad y establecimos reglas que todos debían seguir. Al final, nosotros, el grupo líder, presentamos lo que haríamos mañana y luego tuvimos una hora para usar nuestros teléfonos. Estamos ansiosos por lo que trae el mañana.

Nuestro día comenzó muy temprano, levantándonos y duchándonos para llegar a desayunar a las 7 am. Tuvimos un delicioso desayuno de tostadas francesas, tortillas y salchichas. Después de esto, limpiamos y nos dirigimos al viejo San Juan en un viaje de una hora en autobús, donde la mayoría de nosotros usamos el tiempo para recuperar el sueño. Nos divertimos mucho en San Juan. Fue extremadamente emocionante conocer los eventos históricos y solo caminar algunos de los pasos creados en la historia. Conocimos a este tipo de gira llamado Alvin y fue muy interesante. Siguió contándonos las historias y creo que fue muy divertido porque siguió pidiéndonos que tomáramos fotos y lo disfruté mucho, también fuimos a visitar algunas iglesias y conocer más sobre la historia y los monumentos. Después el tour, fuimos a un pequeño restaurante y tomamos un descanso allí con una deliciosa comida. Después de almorzar, tuvimos tiempo para hacer algunas compras de recuerdos, esta sería la única vez que tendríamos tiempo para hacer esto, así que pudimos explorar muchas tiendas diferentes y hablar con muchos trabajadores diferentes sobre sus opiniones sobre las cosas que deberíamos comprar. También compramos golosinas y comida para los vendedores ambulantes. Específicamente en mi camioneta tuvimos una charla con el conductor sobre su opinión sobre si Puerto Rico debería ser un estado o seguir siendo un territorio. Aprendimos sus puntos de vista y cómo quería cosas para él y su gente. Después de llegar a la gran casa amarilla (hogar), todos nos preparamos y nos dirigimos a la playa nuevamente, ¿cómo no perdernos un día? Regresé y me preparé para la cena, que consistía en chuletas de pollo, albóndigas, arroz y tostadas. Todo estaba delicioso y todos lo disfrutaron. Luego nos reunimos y vimos un documental con Zach Effon sobre cómo el cambio climático y específicamente el huracán María afectaron a muchos. vidas de diferentes puertorriqueños y cómo están arreglando todo el daño que se había hecho y ayudando a la comunidad a florecer nuevamente.

Our day started very early, getting up and showering to arrive for breakfast at 7 am. We had delicious breakfast of French toast, omelette, and sausage. After this, we cleaned up and headed to old San Juan on an hour bus ride, where most of us used the time to catch up on sleep. We had so much fun in San Juan. It was extremely exciting getting to know the historical events and just getting to walk some of the steps created in history we met this tour guy named Alvin and he was very interesting. He kept telling us the stories and I believe he was very fun because he kept asking us to take pictures and I enjoyed it a lot , also we then went to visit some churches and just get to know more about the history and monuments.. After the tour, we went to a small restaurant and took a break there with some delicious food. After we ate lunch we had some time to do some souvenir shopping, this would be the only time we would have time to do this so we got to explore many different stores and talk to many different workers about their opinions on things we should buy. We also bought treats and food for street vendors. Specifically in my van we had a talk with the driver about his opinion on if Puerto Rico should be a state or stay a territory. We learned his views and how he wanted things for himself and his people. After arriving at the big yellow house (home) we all got ready and headed to the beach again how could we not miss a day we had so much fun planning categories and whoever couldn’t have a answer to the question gets dunked in water we went back and got ready for dinner which was chicken cutlet, meet balls,rice and ,tostines everything was so delicious and everyone enjoyed it we then all gathered up and watch a documentary staring Zach Effon about how climate change and specifically Hurricane Maria effected the many lives of different Puerto Ricans and how they are fixing all the damage that had been done and help the community flourish again.

The day started with eating mini pancakes and sausages that were really good and filled us up and got us ready for the workday. Then we drove to the worksite with some good Puerto Rican music. We went to the worksite and started with William and Angel on the instructions and safety equipment. We got our gloves on and our helmets and got started to work. After work we went to Maria‘s house and we ate really good food. We ate chicken, wings and rice. We went back to work quickly. We all worked together as a community and we all did really well then. Later on, we went back to the house and started our beach time it wasn’t a long time but it was very relaxing so it wasn’t bad then after we started a salsa dance that was really good everyone had fun but it was a sweaty time now we have our phone and just chilling now.

El día comenzó comiendo mini panqueques y salchichas que estaban realmente buenas y nos llenaron y nos prepararon para la jornada laboral. Luego nos dirigimos al lugar de trabajo con buena música puertorriqueña. Fuimos al lugar de trabajo y comenzamos con William y Angel con las instrucciones y el equipo de seguridad. Nos pusimos los guantes y los cascos y comenzamos a trabajar. Después del trabajo fuimos a casa de María y comimos muy bien. Comimos pollo, alitas y arroz. Volvimos al trabajo rápidamente. Todos trabajamos juntos como una comunidad y todos lo hicimos muy bien entonces. Más tarde volvimos a la casa y comenzamos nuestro tiempo en la playa. No fue mucho tiempo pero fue muy relajante, así que no estuvo mal después de que comenzamos. un baile de salsa que fue realmente bueno, todos se divirtieron, pero fue un momento sudoroso ahora que tenemos nuestro teléfono y simplemente nos relajamos.

Everyone woke up around 6:30 and got ready for our second work day. We were all pretty tired but excited to finish the job we started yesterday. Breakfast was waffles, sausage, and eggs. We loaded the vans at 9 and headed to the work site. When we got there we got right to work because we knew what to do and wanted to start right away so we could get the job done. After a couple hours of working in the first work site, we finished what we planned on, Alex and Susana thanked us for helping guide them to accomplish their goals . We went to Maria’s house like yesterday and ate lunch which was delicious and enjoyed our meal for an hour-ish. We knew that the reason we came to Puerto Rico is to help those in need from all the constant hurricanes hitting Puerto Rico. In a way, we challenged each other to push through and finish molding and fixing the cement at Alex’s house. Around 2, we went to Maria’s cousin house who has a disabled child and needs help to move around the house. We managed to also finish that too and honestly felt great to help all these families. After we were done with all the work like always we went back to the house and got changed for the beach. The work was tough so the warm beach made us very relaxed. After the beach all of the people who we met and helped over the past two days came over to the Big Yellow House and we had dinner together and they thanked us for all of our help. We felt extremely proud of our work so far this week and they informed us that we were the first group to complete two work projects in the same day. Seeing everyone come together showed us the faces of all the individuals who we helped and really made us realize the impact of our actions. Closing the meeting William, a construction foreman gave us pulseras on behalf of everyone which representing gratitude in Puerto Rican culture. Overall today was not only a work intensive day but also the day we got to connect with everyone we helped.

Todos se levantaron alrededor de las 6:30 y se prepararon para nuestro segundo día de trabajo. Todos estábamos bastante cansados pero emocionados de terminar el trabajo que comenzamos ayer. El desayuno consistía en gofres, salchichas y huevos. Cargamos las camionetas a las 9 y nos dirigimos al sitio de trabajo. Cuando llegamos allí, nos pusimos manos a la obra porque sabíamos qué hacer y queríamos empezar de inmediato para poder hacer el trabajo. Después de un par de horas de trabajar en el primer sitio de trabajo, terminamos lo que planeamos, Alex y Susana nos agradecieron por ayudarlos a guiarlos para lograr sus objetivos. Fuimos a la casa de María como ayer y almorzamos que estaba delicioso y disfrutamos nuestra comida durante una hora. Sabíamos que la razón por la que vinimos a Puerto Rico es para ayudar a los necesitados de todos los huracanes constantes que azotan a Puerto Rico. En cierto modo, nos desafiamos mutuamente a empujar y terminar de moldear y fijar el cemento en la casa de Alex. Alrededor de las 2, fuimos a la casa de la prima de María que tiene un hijo discapacitado y necesita ayuda para moverse por la casa. Logramos terminar eso también y, sinceramente, nos sentimos muy bien al ayudar a todas estas familias. Después de que terminamos con todo el trabajo, como siempre, volvimos a la casa y nos cambiamos para ir a la playa. El trabajo fue duro, por lo que el calor de la playa nos hizo sentir muy relajados. Después de la playa, todas las personas que conocimos y ayudamos en los últimos dos días vinieron a la Gran Casa Amarilla y cenamos juntos y nos agradecieron toda nuestra ayuda. Nos sentimos extremadamente orgullosos de nuestro trabajo en lo que va de semana y nos informaron que éramos el primer grupo en completar dos proyectos de trabajo en el mismo día. Ver a todos unirse nos mostró los rostros de todas las personas a las que ayudamos y realmente nos hizo darnos cuenta del impacto de nuestras acciones. Cerrando la reunión, William, un capataz de la construcción, nos entregó pulseras en nombre de todos, que representan la gratitud en la cultura puertorriqueña. En general, hoy no solo fue un día de trabajo intensivo, sino también el día en que pudimos conectarnos con todas las personas a las que ayudamos.

After a long days work, we got to sleep which was nice, but it was an earlier start than the days before. We had breakfast and we’re off to the forest walk, but before that we got a little taste of society and stopped by Walgreens to meet our tour guide, Ray, and went on a little mission in the Walgreens, but after we’re back to the journey to the forest. Once we got to the forest, we met the owner of the land, who was very in tune with nature. We started with a bonfire, where we talked about what we hope to get out of the journey. After that, we embarked on our journey to the river. Once we got to the river, we all did mud baths. Once we were completely covered, we jumped into the river and washed off all the mud while floating in the river. After we began to explore the ancient hieroglyphics. We then finished off this journey with a vegan lunch and a circle reflecting on the experience with nature we faced. After getting back from an amazing adventure, we enjoyed our free time by going to the beach! We enjoyed our final day spending time together as a community and having fun as a group instead of individuals. We all got together for a dinner and a closing ceremony. In the ceremony, we discussed the true purpose of why we are here in Puerto Rico, to help people, and in the circle we talked about some of the highlights of our trip and spend our final moments truly see what we have done here. We are looking forward to seeing tomorrows sunrise on our last day in Puerto Rico.

Después de un largo día de trabajo, pudimos dormir, lo cual fue agradable, pero fue un comienzo más temprano que los días anteriores. Desayunamos y salimos a caminar por el bosque, pero antes probamos un poco la sociedad y nos detuvimos en Walgreens para conocer a nuestro guía turístico, Ray, y fuimos a una pequeña misión en Walgreens, pero después de de vuelta al viaje al bosque. Una vez que llegamos al bosque, nos encontramos con el dueño del terreno, quien estaba muy en sintonía con la naturaleza. Empezamos con una fogata, donde hablamos de lo que esperamos sacar del viaje. Después de eso, nos embarcamos en nuestro viaje hacia el río. Una vez que llegamos al río, todos nos dimos baños de lodo. Una vez que estuvimos completamente cubiertos, saltamos al río y nos lavamos todo el barro mientras flotamos en el río. Después comenzamos a explorar los antiguos jeroglíficos. Luego terminamos este viaje con un almuerzo vegano y un círculo de reflexión sobre la experiencia con la naturaleza que enfrentamos. Después de regresar de una aventura increíble, ¡disfrutamos nuestro tiempo libre yendo a la playa! Disfrutamos nuestro último día pasando tiempo juntos como comunidad y divirtiéndonos como grupo en lugar de individualmente. Nos reunimos todos para una cena y una ceremonia de clausura. En la ceremonia, discutimos el verdadero propósito de por qué estamos aquí en Puerto Rico, para ayudar a las personas, y en el círculo hablamos sobre algunos de los aspectos más destacados de nuestro viaje y pasamos nuestros últimos momentos para ver realmente lo que hemos hecho aquí. Esperamos ver el amanecer de mañana en nuestro último día en Puerto Rico.
