Meet our 2019 Ambassadors: Sofia on Costa Rica Sea Turtle Expedition
Traveling and doing service work are two things Sofia has been interested in for years. She is thrilled about the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica with Global Works! Sofia has been dedicated to doing her part to make the world a better place since she was a little girl. She started in elementary school with fundraising. Through local donations and matches, she raised $700 for Jump Rope for Heart and the funds were used by The American Heart Association for health education and research. In middle school, she continued fundraising and dedicated herself to making education available to girls across the globe. After reading the book, I Am Malala, Sofia raised $755 for The Malala Fund. Locally, she and her family are committed to stewardship of the natural beauty here in Colorado. Every summer, Sofia works on projects to build or improve trails in Colorado so that we all can continue to enjoy our mountains and the health benefits of being outside in nature. Sofia also prepares meals for women and children experiencing homelessness. Sofia believes that if you have to chance to help, you should seize the opportunity to make an improvement in the world.
At her school Sofia is an avid member of the art community. Her passion is working in graphite sketches of landscapes and people. Sofia has acted as an editor of the annual art publication and has also been nominated to participate in the largest district-wide art contest for students. She retired from playing the guitar and ballet after she discovered rock climbing. Sofia aspires to climb outside more often as she gets older.
Sofia lives in Denver with her family (and cat). One of her goals before she graduates from high school is to hike the tallest mountains in the state (the “14ers”). She’s completed 5 so far. Her family would describe her as curious, funny, and enthusiastic.
Sofia is excited to take on this opportunity to travel to Costa Rica and experience another culture. As an Ambassador, she is ready to share her experience and connect with other kids who are interested in international travel and service.
