SAMPLE ITINERARY
The French Alps (5 days) – Upon arrival in Paris we take the train to Grenoble and the majestic French Alps. Each year we stay in a small village far from the tourist crowds where down to earth, open-hearted people make for a warm reception! This is an ideal setting for our orientation to the French culture. We will take a few days to get to know one another and explore this charming area. The towering scenery is breathtaking and adventure awaits us. During our stay in the Alps we choose from activities such as canyoning, glacier hiking, rock climbing or whitewater rafting. Our group stays together in a small gite (guest house) that provides traditional French meals and hospitality.
Provence and Community Project (6 days) – As we become more comfortable communicating in French we will begin the community service element of our journey. We travel to Provence in Southern France and settle into our locally run“gite” or lodge. During these days we will focus on cultural exchange and language fluency by working and playing alongside local friends on environmental and historical restoration initiatives that have been created on a community level. We will also enjoy afternoons exploring the region. We take excursions to hike in Rousillon, shop at the market place of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue,and tour the fortress of Les Baux de Provence. We will gain a deeper understanding of the French culture as we enjoy afternoons and evenings of fun interactive language activities and prepare for our upcoming homestay.
Narbonne/Carcassonne (12 days) - Via the TGV (high speed) train, we are off to our homestay town near the Mediterranean! We will travel to the beautiful medieval town of Narbonne to meet and stay with our gracious host families for 12 days. It’s a great opportunity to test your language skills, make friends, and absorb the many cultural differences found in day-to-day living and conversation. Some days are “family days” when we will spend time immersed in the life of our host families. One of our family days will be Bastille Day, and we will be treated to a local view of this popular holiday! We will also have “project days” during which we will get together as a group to take excursions to the beach, through the fortress Carcassonne, and to the Pyrenees Mountains near the border of Spain.
Paris “The City of Lights” and Travel Home (4 days) - A visit to France would never be complete without time spent in Paris. We spend a few days exploring a city teeming with romance and history. We kick off our visit with a cruise along the Seine River where Paris monuments are lit against the night sky. During the days, there is so much to see and do: Tour d’Eiffel, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, Montmatre, le Louvre, Musee de Picasso, and Quai d’Orsay...the list goes on and on! We’ll muster enough energy to have a final dinner celebration during which we will reminisce how our time with Global Works gave us a unique and fulfilling glimpse of French culture. Our new friends, vastly improved language skills, and fond memories of our days in France will remain with us long after we have bid au revoir!
