SAMPLE ITINERARY
Paris and Orientation (3 days)- Welcome to the city of lights! Teeming with culture and history, a trip to France would never be complete without time spent here in Paris. Upon arrival from our overnight flight, we are greeted by our Global Works leaders at the airport. Following a brief bus ride to the hostel, the group settles in, rests, then begins orientation and language activities. We kick off our visit with a cruise along the Seine River where Paris monuments are lit against the night sky. In addition, we will have time to explore the timeless squares and cafes scattered throughout the city. During our journey through Paris, we get our French speaking skills up to speed with informal language lessons and scavenger hunts.
Elancourt and Community Project (7 days) – A short train ride brings us to our home for the week. Elancourt, on the outskirts of the city in the region of Yvelines, is an area that blends France’s old, valuable heritage with a “ville nouvelle” city plan. Here, the group will have the opportunity to test their language skills, make friends, and absorb the surrounding French culture. We are centrally located in a hostel.
Each day, our group participates in community service and educational projects. We spend two days with students in the primary and middle schools, participating in a cultural exchange with the students. One day, there will be an excursion to Versailles, the opulent palace built by Louis XIV. In the evenings, we have time for cooking lessons, sports classes, or a pot-luck dinner with local families, all cultural events that will help hone our French language skills.
Paris “The City of Lights” and Travel Home (4 days) - We will spend the final days on guided tours discovering exciting historical and cultural centers like le Louvre, le Tour Eiffel, Musée de Picasso, Notre Dame, Montmatre, Sacre Coeur, and Quai d'Orsay. We’ll save some energy for our final night, when we will have a dinner celebration to reminisce about the unique and fulfilling glimpse of French culture that we have just experienced. As Hemingway once wrote, “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” Our new friends, vastly improved language skills, and fond memories of our days in France will most certainly stay with us long after we have bid au revoir!
